Antigua is located in the eastern Caribbean Sea just 650 km southeast of Puerto Rico. The open Atlantic Ocean lies to the north and east. The island's newly opened international terminal offers daily direct flights from London, New York, Miami and Toronto, along with several weekly flights and connections from main hubs in Europe and North America. Major US destinations such as New York, Atlanta and Miami are a mere three to four hours flight from Antigua, providing swift connectivity. Antigua,'ancient' in Spanish, is named after an icon in Seville Cathedral, Santa Maria de la Antigua.

The combined size of 442 km makes Antigua & Barbuda the 9th largest country by size in the Caribbean. Antigua, the main island, is about 280 km2, Barbuda is 161 km2 and Redonda (inhabited island) is 1.3 km2.

Tourism is the key driver of GDP and generates around 60% of the island’s income from key markets such as the US, Canada and Europe.

The national currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (EC$). Pegged to the US Dollar, the exchange rate has remained consistent for almost three decades. US$1 is equivalent to EC$2.68

CLIMATE

With a tropical climate, the islands are tempered by sea breezes and trade winds keeping humidity at bay. Average daytime temperature ranges from 21-30oC, with night temperatures during the cool season falling to around 16-18oC.

St. John’s, Deep Water Harbour has the capacity for up to 4 cruise ships and over 10,000 passengers per day. A major waterfront redevelopment initiative is planned.
